Work on returning the rare set of bells at Mordiford Holy Rood church is progressing well. They have now come back from Taylors in Loughborough who have completed the conservation and cleaning and are currently being rehung in their strengthened frame.
There will be a Quarter Peal rung at 4pm on June 30th, followed by open ringing @5pm, to celebrate the return of bells and Roger Moss’ 82 birthday.
More information on the Taylors website here and a Hereford Times Report is here.
Anyone wishing to donate to the Mordiford Bell project, should do so through Mordiford Parish Giving or cash or cheque to PCC of Mordiford c/o Mr R G Moss, Little Hope, Mordiford, Hereford HR1 3LT.
This session is for anyone who would like to move on to ringing Plain Hunt or who have already started and would like the opportunity to practice and build confidence.
It will take place on Saturday 26th April from 2pm – 4pm at Marden.
Spaces for this session are limited so please book your place with Isabel, hfd_education@hdgb.org
Our next district practice will be at Fownhope on Saturday 22nd March, ringing will be from 2:30pm to 4pm.
All abilities welcome, there will be plenty of opportunity to ring with something to suit everyone.
The Peter Hughes Trophy is awarded annually bu the Hereford District Committee for outstanding services to the District in the previous year.
At the Hereford District AGM on 25th January 2025, the Trophy was awarded to Vicki Rees of Ewyas Harold for organising the “Twinklies” – a monthly mid-week daytime practice usually at Kentchurch to improve method ringing in South Herefordshire. Nick Cooper-Tomkins accepted the trophy on behalf of Vicki and presented it to her at the following weekly Ewyas Harold practice … which just happened to be at Grosmont!
The rare set of bells at Mordiford Holy Rood church were carefully taken down on 4th January 2025 and sent off to Taylors in Loughborough for the next part of their conservation and cleaning. All new ringing fittings will be manufactured, together with a new rope guide.
The bells are a complete ring of five by William Huntbatch of Worcester dating from 1687. They will not be retuned nor augmented and so when the work is complete, they will sound as near as possible to how they did nearly 340 years ago!
